The 2nd bolded section refers to a sometime-practice of actually making a covenant at baptism. So, the common present references to renewing those covenants may stem from that practice.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately, for the purposes of a discussion on the existence or non-existence of pre-pedobaptismal covenant-making, I haven't given much thought to religion in a long, long time. I'm sure there is a blog out there somewhere where this sort of thing can be debated and welcomed. Since I'm agnostic now, I don't really care. But thanks anyway!
